CESL

I have already been America 8 months; 7 of them I spent in CESL. Now, I will graduate from CESL in the near future. I hope to graduate, because I want to study in SIUC as soon as possible, but, I also feel sad to be leaving. So, I think I can leave some advice for CESL. I think we need to increase extracurricular work to improve our English skill and abilities in our spare time. We can study a lot, but we do not have enough chance or environment to use them. Going out of class, contacting the US crowd, and touching the US culture that should make English not only a language, but also a common communication tool; we can understand English, instead of only reciting it. I believe we can improve our English quickly. At that time, we can use all of the knowledge that we study in class to communicate and practice. That should be one of the best ways to examine our learning outcomes and improve our English, rather than quizzes or examinations.

Who are the homeless?
A large part of people are homeless in American society now. Parts of these people were “sent out from the hospitals” (Kozol, 1989, p. 450) because of society’s wrong decision. Older men and women, small children and unmarried mothers with children are as a large part of homeless people, especially in the urban areas. “It seems as though homelessness is almost identical to spouselessness” (Bidinotto, 1990, p.47); that makes their lives very difficult, such as the articles said ; “given that a working single mother must pay for day care and often finds it difficult to both hold down a good job and single-handedly take care of the children” (Bidinotto, 1990, p. 47).

What causes homelessness?
The group of homeless people are not a whole group, but can be divided into three groups. Many factors affect the group of homeless people, such as “economic recession, unemployment, inflation, decreasing availability of low-rent housing, and a low level of job skills” (Torrey, 1991, p.47); they do not have enough abilities to have a good life. These people usually can get the public’s sympathy to help them get out from being “down-on-my-luck” (Torrey, 1991, p. 35). In addition, many people abuse alcoholics and drugs, which makes them become homeless, and also lose the sympathy from public. But, society has to provide part of this kind of people help, in order to help them save money to quit drinking or smoking.

So, most of these people do not have enough abilities and skills to work for enough money, and also have many pressures from society, that cause them become homeless.

Transportation

Now, there is more and more communication all around the world, and also people want to get to anywhere on the earth. So, the technological development of transportation has become fast and perfect. The improvement and popularization of airplane travel is the most technological breakthrough. People can arrive to many places fast, even though the destination is far away from your home. Also, you can feel very comfortable because of the advanced equipment. The train travel had a big technological improvement as well. People never feel train travel is a boring thing; technology makes trains run fast and construct railways to anywhere. So people can get to most places with short time. For normal lives, technologies on public transportation have constructed a very good transport network, and thus reduced the traffic problems and facilitated people’s trips. So, the technological development of transportation can make people’s lives better and better.

Network

With the development of technology in every area, there are many things around us that have become changed; some changes make us amazed, but some of them we do not realize. In my opinion, the development of the network is the biggest technological change right now. First of all is the transportation; people are usually familiar with writing letters in many areas, so that revise a good transportation system networks to operate. Technology improves the rate and speed of transportation that makes people get letters or other things as soon as possible. Second, telephone networks have improved and been perfected. People can have a good communication environment, and never worry about signal problems in most places. Third, I think Internet network is the most valuable and influential development in the 21st century. Maybe just several years ago, people who lived in different areas just talked to each other by letter or telephone, and they did not live far away from each other; it was also impossible for them to see each other. But now, the technology’s development makes it come true through Internet. People can make a normal communication even though they live in the opposite sides of the erath.

Plane Travel

Now, with the development of technology and information, travelling by an airplane has become a more and more common thing. Maybe some people do not know well about how to take airplane, or be afraid of airplane trip because almost airplanes fly above cloud during the trip. But for me, the airplane travel is really an amazing thing. First of all, I think a trip that takes airplane is the best way to get to destination, because the services on the airplane are really thoughtful and comfortable. Not only different kinds of food and drink on the airplanes, but also have many varieties of media entertainment on them, so travelers cannot feel tired and boring during the trip. Second, airplane can take you to be the fastest speed than any other vehicles, especially when airplane takes off and lands on the ground. From the other side, that also saving travelers’ time with the high-speed. Some people think take airplane to travel is very dangerous, but I do not agree with it. I think when the airplane fly to the highest place, also the period that make me feel amazed and surprised, such like a song sung “ I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky.” As these three reasons, if give me a choice to travel, I am sure I will choose an airplane.

Pay attention to public transportation

In “Solution to transportation woes” (2008), by Moaz Yusof Ahmad, it explains how to solve the transportation problems and how to improve transportation operation in Malaysia. The Malaysian government wants to improve public transportation this year because it’s necessary and important to citizens. The government’s goal is that people use public transportation instead of private cars in a few years. First, the government wants some people to use public transportation, but people also raise many factors for public transportation’s operation at the same time. The public transportation now is a very incomprehensible problem that connects many factors. The CVLB (a part of the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development) said the public transportation should become a business with benefits. So, maybe government should put public transportation as an economic factor in the future. But, the public transportation should be improved without bureaucracy. In addition, a railway, with many advantages, plays an important role in public transportation. Malaysia also uses a railway to connect its transportation network. Public transportation’s work is not the same as business; their goal is not to earn money; sometimes they also need government’s financial help. LRT (a mass-transit system) is the fast way to transport, but it is impossible to build if in every area. Now, there are still many problems in Malaysia’s public transportation system, so the author hopes these problems should be solved with a bus, which is easily realized and helps the development of the public transportation system in the future.
The development of science and technology affects the people’s transportation form. Private car does not seemed as high status in normal life; maybe sometimes it could be deemed as a burden, in that if brings the terrible traffic, the high-speed rise oil price and so many boring things. So, the public transportation gradually has become an important and necessary element in modern society.

I think the public transportation should get more benefits and subsidies from the government, even though its goal is not profit. So, that could be the first way to solve the public transportation problem, because the public transportation system could affect the whole society’s operation. A good public transportation operates can help relieve traffic pressure. As this result, people can get to work on time and easily plan the normal schedule. People will not waste too much time to tune up or gas up, also they will not be worried that they cannot find parking spaces. In addition, when face an emergency, invalids or wounded people could be sent quickly to hospital because the perfect public transportation system can avoid traffic jams’ occurrence. So, the improvement and perfection of public transportation will affect as well the whole society.

Second, I think there has been a new opinion proposed about environment protection for a few years. The public transportation can to some extent reduce the carbon dioxide’s exhaust caused by the fuel’s burning, because public transportation can reduce the use of many private cars. Although a private car cannot exhaust as much as waste gas as a bus, a car usually cannot have a passage in every seat, so that wastes a lot of space, but the operate of car also use the similar oil as the car run with full of people in every seat, but a bus can take people together. With this reason, the total waste gas discharge used by private cars is much more than that of buses or railways used, and some kinds of public transportation have begun to give up using oil and replacing it with electricity. So, for protecting environment, or for saving oil resource, public transportation can to some degree save space, then save the fuel used, thus reduces the environmental pollution.

The last reason which should be the biggest one is about oil. The second reason was about the fact that oil burning causes environmental pollution, but maybe some people do not care about it; but for oil, there is a very serious problem that makes people have to pay attention that is the high-speed rise of oil price. With the development of economies, more and more people have the ability to afford a car. But people who have cars usually pay attention to the oil price, and the high-speed rise of oil price right now may be the most terrible problem to them. In China, I know people always want to save much money for oil, and at this time, the developed public transportation system satisfies people and provides them a convenient transport network. So, that is the reason some people in China have begun to use bus, railway or other public transport networks instead of their cars.

In conclusion, the public transportation is not only a convenient vehicle for people, but also is an important and necessary element of the high-speed development in the modern society. A good public transportation system can to some extent control the traffic jam caused by larger population daily, reduce the environment pollution and also can steady the high-speed increase in oil price. So, from each side, government should pay attention to public transportation, thus improving and perfecting public transportation now is very important and necessary.

Train travel

Now, with more and more high-speed development in modern society, there are many kinds of transport that are provided to people to travel to anywhere all around the world. But I usually like to travel by train. Some of my friends suggest that I travel by airplane, which they think is the fastest and most comfortable transport tool. So, I have taken a plane several times; however, I never feel it is better than train travel, even though it ran faster than train. In my opinion, there are three reasons to me why I choose train travel. First, taking a train is safer than taking a plane. There are many air crashes happen every year and maybe nobody can survive in the accident. Second, you can go to many places by train that plane cannot be, such like some scenic spots, mountains, and villages. Some people said we could go to big cities; actually there are airports there, but the airports are usually located far away from cities. But train stations usually are in the center of cities. Third, I think the way from beginning to the destination also be an important part of travel. During the train travel, I can enjoy the excitement and happiness of this trip. I also can look for many beautiful places during the way, and these places may appear in my next travel plan. But when I travel by plane, I just see clouds all the time; maybe the first time if makes me feel it is novel, but following that is will just leave me bored. So, if somebody asks me which kind of transportation I like, I will always choose train travel.

Necessary of the public transportation system

Necessary of the public transportation system

In “Bus operators must buck up” (2008), by Moaz Yusuf, it explains the influence to transport operators and how to solve the problem when the oil prices rise as they are now. The author has sent a letter to make a discussion about the fuel subsidies from government if the oil price increases to a high level. But maybe it will not happen as he thought before. The rising price of oil also affects as same as people’s cost. With this reason, the government decided to keep the subsidy as before. The discussion was released, and it is helpful to transport operators. We also need to pay attention to transport operators, especially bus drivers who cannot be replaced in the short term with the oil prices’ rise. The PMBOA requested to increase ticket prices to include the upward cost, but they also do not make sure whether that way can raise the benefits. KTB’s chairman revise about public transport drivers, and also drew up a rule. He thought that should only be for personal transportation, instead of the government transport drivers who can get subsidies, because he thought that would not be impartial. He thought that idea would come true in different areas if every government made it reasonable. The authors agree with him, and also think the NPTA is in charge of making a reasonable rule for the public transportation. The LPTA has given the right to the NPTA. But the author does not agree with all of the kinds of transportation being afforded the same services. He will suggest relevant determents to provide inter-city drivers subsidies, because of its important place. Then, both the operators and the NPTA and LPTA will face the pressure that comes from the increased costs. The author agrees with the rule to increase the tickets price but the rule must be drawn up clearly and reasonably. So, the transport operators may earn much more from their customers than from government’s subsidies.

In my opinion, I agree with the increase the tickets price for public transportations, and I think the author also wanted to use this way to increase the whole public transportation system. First, to increase the transport operators’ subsidies or salaries is very important and necessary to mobilize their initiative. I have taken American buses many times; usually they do not have many buses that allowed me to choose; I have to wait for a long time if I miss a bus; and buses are always late. I think the main reason that causes this problem is that low pay leads drivers to be lazy and irresponsible. Maybe they always think their job is too boring with a low pay; some of them also need to pay lots of fee of their buses themselves, so they may lose their initiative and passion to try to do their best to their job. So, government or transport companies should increase their operators; there should be salaries or subsidies to make sure the public transportation operates normally, especially at present when the oil prices increase very quickly daily.

Second, as the article said, in my opinion the author not only asks to increase public transport operators’ pay, but also wants to upgrade and perfect the system at the same time. Now, with the high speed rise of the oil price, and reliance of too many fields, I think the public transportation needs or has to play an important role instead of more and more private cars’ being used. Now, many people who live in America have to drive their car to school or their workplace because of the discommodious public transportation. As a result, they also have to pay higher and higher oil bills. So, maybe the public transportation’s quality and quantity rise, such as the buses’ frequency and comfort, can attract lots of people to give up their private cars, and replace them with buses or subways, even though the ticket prices rise. That is because I think the rising price of tickets is still far below the increase of oil price.

Third, the better public transportation not only can make people save money, but also can help relieve the high speed rise of the oil price. Now, I think one of the main reasons lead oil price to rise is that every government wants to limit the oil use. Now, more and more people have begun to have their own cars, the demand has not become necessary; also, there are lots of problems of oil, such as the factor that oil is non-renewable resources, pollution is caused by the use of oil and there is more and more oil editions among different areas. I think there reasons lead the oil price to rise, because every government or company wants to limit the oil use. So I think using public transportation to replace the private cars is really the best way to solve the high oil price problem right now.

In conclusion, to increase public transport operators’ pay, thus increase their initiative to work, they can then attract many people to use the public transportation system, thereby government or transport companies can earn many more benefits to improve their services, and people can enjoy taking the bus instead of cars; I think that is really a virtuous cycle. At that time, people will give up their own cars and replace them by bus, because they can save much money on oil and they also can get a good feeling when take a bus; for public transportation, they can earn much more benefits, and they can raise drivers’ pay and make customers feel comfortable. So in my opinion to perfect the public transportation system is one of the best ways for government, transport companies, and people right now.

Future of the oil price

Summary Response
July 3, 2008

Future of the oil price

In “Oil: A global crisis” (2008), by John Murray, it explains some reasons for the rapid increase in oil price and what will happen in the future. First, the oil price has increased because of the Iraq war. The oil expert explains that the oil price will be cheaper than now without the Iraq war, and the oil price has risen faster in the period after war. An expert said there would be the highest price of oil next year. The expert said Iraq is a big oil producing area, so its oil supply can have a great effect on the oil price. Now, eight countries have already been at a peak of oil production and two countries are also close to the top. The expert said the US invaded Iraq to get oil instead of the suggestion of developing oil fields in America. An editor said this was an important reason that can affect the oil market. Then, the expert indicated that the oil production would not rise, even if there is a higher requirement all around the world in the future. So, the expert gave three ways to predict the future of the oil price. First is that the price will be low, by cutting some small areas’ oil provision or making Iraq become peaceful, but this seemed totally unrealistic. Second is that the oil price will keep steady, and it may be not come true soon. Third is that the oil price will rise quickly, because of the oil production countries’ limit on export, and this is well expected to happen.

From the article, first it is clear to see that the most important reason that affects the oil price’s rapid increase is the war, especially the Iraq war. The armies need much oil for military equipments to work when the war begins. Much oil, as an important and necessary fuel is provided for a wasteful attack instead of for useful development. In the other hand, much oil production equipments will be destroyed during the war; maybe it can waste much oil because of the leak caused by pipelines’ being broken. So, wars cause the affection of the normal use of the oil. Many areas lack the oil to develop, even to maintain the essential lives. In my opinion, stopping war is the best way to steady the oil price.

Second, I think the quick increase in oil prices follows the high-speed development of modern industry. With the high-speed and enormous technological develop in many industrial areas, many new types of equipment are invented to satisfy people’s growing demands. That means too much oil will be used for this new equipments’ normal operation and more and more oil will be produced in the future. In addition, every country also needs much oil with the high-speed development of the modern society. Maybe many factories just work 6 hours per day, but they will work 8-10 hours per day to produce as much as possible to satisfy people’s high demands right now. So, not only different countries but also different companies all want to get as much as possible oil to make sure they can get the greatest benefits, so oil becomes more and more necessary and more and more an exigency daily, and then this causes the oil competition among different countries or companies become intense and tense. With this reason, the oil price averages up to a very high level that makes it outdistance its own value.

The last, but I think the most important, is the oil, as one of the most important fuels on the earth, is a non-renewable resource. That means we cannot produce oil, and once we run out of oil, we will never use it any more. Now the reserves of oil have progressively decreased, so the oil price becomes more and more expensive. But I think the expensive price also cannot decrease the use of oil. Even though many scientists have begun to research new energies to use instead of oil, such as solar energy and nuclear energy, their energy and use cannot get the same level as those of oil. So I think oil will be used as much as possible in the future as same as its price. Now, nothing can replace it in the short term; maybe until oil is gone we also cannot find a better resource. So in order to limit the oil use, I think it is the main reason of the quick rise of the oil price.

In conclusion, in my opinion the wars’ consumption and destruction, the competition among counties or companies, the oil reserve’s decrease are three main reasons that cause the high oil price and still rise fast now. Oil as an ancient energy used by us for a long time; we cannot give up using it in a short time. So I think avoiding the wars, reducing the luxurious demand and developing new energy will be the new ways to reduce the high oil price.

The nuclear family

The nuclear family

With the development of the modern society, families have begun to become more and more small. In my opinion, the nuclear family is a more ideal family than the big family. First, I think the less population, the more duty. People in a small family should think about and finish doing lots of things independently; it is not like the members in a big family where they can share the work of a family. So I think it is a good way that people can practice and improve their abilities as much as possible, and it also is a good way for societies’ development. Second, a small family costs less than a big family. That means people in a small family do not need to do too much work for normal lives. That makes the lives become comfortable and suitable, and people enjoy their lives without the heavy work. The last reason is that a small family can easily become a united group of a society. Members in a small family can know each other clearly, which makes it easier for them to understand everyone’s both outsides and insides. I think a united group will be an excellent element of all the society. So, I agree that a nuclear family will become more important and normal with society’s development, and I also think that one day, small families will prevail instead of big families.
